JAKARTA - The Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Bintang Puspayoga said the prevalence of violence against women in 2021 decreased when compared to 2016.

"In general, the results of the 2021 National Women's Life Experience Survey show a decrease in the prevalence of violence against women compared to 2016, whether it's perpetrated by a partner, as well as by non-partners, as well as violence perpetrated by a partner and other than a partner with a lifetime reference," Bintang said at the Release of the Results of the National Women's Life Experience Survey & the 2021 National Life Experience Survey of Children & Adolescents in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Monday, December 27.

She details 26.1 percent of women aged 15 to 64 years old have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a partner and other than a partner, down from 2016 which was 33.4 percent.

Her party also added that the results of the 2021 National Survey of Child and Adolescent Life Experiences also showed encouraging results.

"If we look at the results of the 2021 National Survey of Child and Adolescent Life Experiences, it is also quite encouraging because in general it also shows a decrease in the prevalence of violence against children," she said.

She explained that in 2021 it was recorded that 34 percent of boys and 41.05 percent of girls aged 13 to 17 years had experienced one or more types of violence in their lifetime, down from 2018 which was recorded at 62.31 percent of boys and girls. 62.75 percent of girls experience one or more types of violence in their lifetime.

She said the decrease in the prevalence of violence against women and children was the result of the joint efforts of various parties.

"The measurable reduction in the prevalence of violence against women and children in 2021 is certainly the fruit of various prevention and handling efforts carried out jointly across sectors," she said.

Therefore, she appreciates all parties who have been involved so far.

"I once again express my highest appreciation to all parties, starting from the smallest level, namely the family, the community in general, the central government to the village government, academics, as well as business professionals, and the media for their hard work and collaboration over the past five years," she said.

She also asked all parties to continue to fight in preventing violence against women and children.

"Although the data illustrates the declining prevalence of violence against women and children, the numbers are still alarming, meaning we cannot be complacent and stop here, we still have a long way to go because there shouldn't be a single child, not a single woman should experience violence, whatever the reason," she said.
