Tourists Are Reminded To Beware Of High Waves On The South Coast Of Java

CILACAP - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to tourists traveling to the South Coast of Java, especially West Java, Central Java, and the Special Region of Yogyakarta to be aware of the possibility of high waves.

"During school holidays like today, people can use it to vacation at the beach", said Teguh Wardoyo, Head of the BMKG Technician Group at the Cilacap Meteorological Station, Teguh Wardoyo, as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, December 21.

However, he said, tourists are often unaware of the wave conditions because it is so much fun playing water or bathing on the beach.

According to him, this negligence can cause tourists to have accidents such as being dragged by high waves that come suddenly.

"Therefore, for tourists traveling on the southern coast of West Java, Central Java, and DI Yogyakarta, especially coastal areas that are directly connected to the high seas, we urge you to be aware of the possibility of high waves in the next few days", he said.

In this regard, he said his party had issued a high-wave early warning which was valid until December 22, 2021, and would be updated if there were further developments.

Wave heights in the southern waters of West Java to DI Yogyakarta and the Indian Ocean south of West Java to DI Yogyakarta have the potential to reach the range of 2.5 meters to 4 meters or fall into the category of high waves.

According to him, the wave height is influenced by wind patterns in the southern part of Indonesia, which predominantly move from south to west with wind speeds ranging from 4-30 knots.

"Especially now that the westerly wind season is taking place, so high waves often occur. The waters south of West Java to DI Yogyakarta that have the potential for high waves include the southern coasts of Sukabumi, Cianjur, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Pangandaran, Cilacap, Kebumen, Purworejo, and Yogyakarta", said Teguh.
