A 5.0 Magnitude Earthquake In East Java Reported To Cause Damage In Jember

JAKARTA - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 occurred in the southern region of East Java on Thursday, December 16 at 06.01 a.m. local time and was reported to have caused damage in several areas in Jember Regency.

"Until now, there have been reports of the impact of the damage caused by the earthquake in several areas in Jember Regency," said the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Coordinator for Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation, Daryono in Jakarta, as reported by Antara.

The earthquake which was centered at the coordinates of 8.55 degrees South latitude - 113.48 degrees East Longitude or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 43 km southwest of Jember City, East Java at a depth of 26 km is estimated to be triggered by active fault activity on the seabed.

The initial magnitude indicated a magnitude of 5.1 earthquake was later updated to 5.0.​

The modeling results show that the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami.

By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was an intraplate earthquake. The results of the analysis of the source mechanism indicate that the earthquake had a thrust fault.

Daryono said the earthquake shaking was felt in the Puger area on the MMI scale V where the tremor was felt by almost all residents, many people woke up. In Jember IV MMI is when many people feel in the house during the day.
