BALIKPAPAN - The Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Class I Meteorological Station (SAMS) Sepinggan, Balikpapan, said that coastal areas in East Kalimantan have the potential to experience tidal waves as a result of high waves which are predicted to occur in five days, namely December 18-22, 2021.

"This early warning is conveyed so that all parties are alert. We have also conveyed this warning to districts/cities", said Head of the Class I Meteorological Station Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman (SAMS) Sepinggan, Balikpapan, Erika Mardiyanti in Balikpapan, Antara, Wednesday, December 15.

Meanwhile, based on the tidal forecast for Balikpapan from December 15 to December 23, the maximum tidal height is estimated to be between 2.6 meters to 2.8 meters.

The maximum tide is predicted to occur on December 20 and December 21 at 19.00 WITA, with a height of 2.8 meters. All parties, especially residents living in coastal areas, should be aware of the potential for the rob.

Erika said that it was not only East Kalimantan Province that had the potential for rob on December 18-22, because BMKG gave early warnings to 19 provinces that could potentially be affected by tidal waves.

The 19 provinces are the Natuna Islands, Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung, Lampung, Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Ternate, Halmahera and northern West Papua.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of North Penajam Paser Regency (PPU), East Kalimantan, Nurlalaila, when confirmed regarding the early warning, his party immediately anticipated.

Anticipation is being carried out such as reminding various parties to be vigilant, because the coastal areas in PPU Regency have recently been hit by tidal waves, especially in several sub-districts in the Penajam District.

"We have also conveyed this early warning to several WhatsApp Groups (WAG), Facebook, and Instagram because social media is a medium that is owned by all citizens so that delivery through social media is also one of the ways that we take", said Nurlaila.
