Malaysia Proposes Anti Party-Hopping Bill 2022

JAKARTA - The Minister at the Malaysian Prime Minister's Office for Law and Legislation, Wan Junaidi said that he would propose an Anti Party-Hopping Bill (RUU) in July 2022 as one of the government's transformation initiatives.

As reported by Antara, Sunday, December 12, Wan Junaidi said this during one of his visits to Kuching, Sunday, on the sidelines of preparations for the Sarawak State Election.

Junaidi explained that the three main government transformation initiatives carried out by his ministry were transformations in government administration, parliamentary reform, and judicial independence.

"Transformations in government administration include the Anti Party-Hopping Law, limiting the prime minister's term of office to no more than 10 years, implementing elections for 18-year-olds, and automatic voter registration," he said.

Meanwhile, parliamentary reforms include reintroducing the Parliamentary Services Act, amendments to the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act, 1952, and introducing a Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament.

He said elections for 18-year-olds and automatic voter registration are expected to take place on January 1, 2022, while the Bill on Parliamentary Reform is scheduled to be presented to the speaker of parliament in mid-January next year and submitted to parliament in March.

He also spoke about a proposed bill to amend the Federal Constitution with respect to the 1963 Malaysia Treaty (MA63).

According to him, the first submission of the bill will be on November 3, while the second reading is scheduled for December 14.

“The passage of the bill could pave the way for more rights that have been eroded over the years, to be returned to the people of Sabah and Sarawak. This is one of my priorities right now and I hope the people of Sabah and Sarawak will support me in this," Junaidi said.
