MUMBAI - India on Saturday, December 4 reported its highest daily death toll from COVID-19 since July after two states improved their regional death toll records.

The eastern state of Bihar added 2,426 previously unrecorded deaths, while the southern state of Kerala added 263 deaths on Sunday, a federal health ministry spokesman told Reuters.

Based on the revised record, the daily death toll was 2,796 -- the highest since July 21, according to a Reuters tally.

During the second wave of COVID-19 in March and April this year, thousands of people died in India and millions more were exposed to the virus.

Indian states have continued to improve their record of the number of deaths from COVID-19 that have been underreported in recent months.

The increase in the number of deaths is in line with the predictions of some medical experts that the number of people who died in India due to COVID-19 actually reached more than 473,326 people than previously reported.
