Nurdin Abdullah Is Sentenced To 5 Years For Corruption, KPK Learns The Decision Before Taking Further Steps

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will study the verdict handed down by the Makassar Corruption Court against the inactive South Sulawesi Governor Nurdin Abdullah. Nurdin was sentenced to 5 years in prison after being proven to have accepted bribes and gratuities worth 350.000 Singapore dollars and IDR 8.087 billion.

"Currently, the team of prosecutors has stated that they are thinking about it within the next seven days after the verdict is read. We will fully study all the considerations of the panel of judges," Acting KPK Spokesperson for Enforcement Affairs Ali Fikri told reporters, Tuesday, November 30.

Ali said this needed to be done because the legal considerations and facts in the decision were not read out in full. Thus, studying the decision in full is a step taken before deciding the attitude to be taken.

"After that, we will immediately determine the position on the said decision," he said.

As previously reported, the Makassar Corruption Court not only sentenced Nurdin Abdullah to 5 years in prison. He was also required to pay a fine of IDR 500 million, a subsidiary of 4 months in prison.

The verdict is lighter than the demands of the KPK prosecutor who requested that Nurdin Abdullah be sentenced to 6 years in prison plus a fine of IDR 500 million, subsidiary to 6 months in prison.

In addition, Nurdin is also required to pay compensation to the state in the amount of IDR 2.187 billion and 350 thousand Singapore dollars no later than a month after the court's decision has permanent legal force. If he does not make the payment, his property will be confiscated and auctioned off.

If the auction results are not sufficient, Nurdin will be sentenced to an additional three years in prison. Next, the judge also ruled that Nurdin's political rights were revoked for 3 years after he served his sentence.
