JAKARTA - Mitsubishi Motors recently released the latest generation from its iconic pickup, All New Triton, which carries an inspirational design from the XRT Concept.

The presence of All New Triton has been eagerly awaited by fans and loyal Mitsubishi customers. Triton's superiority through challenging off-road terrain and extraordinary durability has made it a favorite among pickup lovers. This model, which is present in both gasoline and diesel variants, will also soon be presented in hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) versions in the next few years.

Mitsubishi Motors Executive Vice President, Hiroshi Nagaoka, revealed this ambitious plan. He stated that Mitsubishi has strong intentions to release Triton on its power base in the future.

"We believe that the existence of an electric-powered pick-up truck (BEV) will be important in the future. However, we still need to formulate the right time for its launch. Before that, we are also considering other variations such as hybrid or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle)," Nagaoka said as quoted by CarSales, August 1.

Nagaoka insists that the use of hybrid technology is in excellent agreement with the new Triton structure that uses a lambder frame without the need for additional modifications. This allows the production of a hybrid version of Triton or HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) to be fast and efficient.

"However, we are also reviewing the two types of electrification, the yaito battery and the HEV. This step is part of our future plan, and we are currently in a sophisticated engineering stage in this development," Nagaoka added.

Nagaoka is also aware that Mitsubishi needs to pursue an evolving electrification trend. Therefore, Mitsubishi plans to focus on developing hybrid technology first before finally producing PHEV and EV models, so that it can compete with its competitors.

"We recognize that our competitors are also designing similar steps in the future, so we have to consider this. We are determined not to be left behind, even hoping to surpass them in some aspects," Nagaoka continued.

Mitsubishi has previously announced their plans to launch 16 new models, including nine electric vehicle models, by 2028.

In Mitsubishi's global planning revealed in March, it appears that one pickup model will be part of the ranks of the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). However, plans to use hybrid technology are not visible in the image.

If All New Triton will be presented in a hybrid version, this model will continue to use 2.4 liters of gasoline as in conventional variants. However, Mitsubishi does not rule out the possibility of embedding double electric motors as applied to the All New ministries model, thus providing maximum extra power.

Triton competitors such as Toyota Hilux have confirmed the use of 48V mid-hybrid technology in the coming year. In addition, other pickups such as the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok are also planning to bring electric powertrains in the next few years.
