Celebration Of World Graphic Design Day Which Is A Promising Profession On Today's History, April 27 1995

JAKARTA - World Graphic Design Day is celebrated every April 27. This memorial is taken from the anniversary of Icograda, Canada's graphic design association in 1963.

Icograda stands for The International Council of Graphic Design Associations. Having a worldwide network, Icograda is an institution that houses professionals in the field of communication design.

Some of the communication design disciplines covered by Icograda, including graphic design, visual communication, research, education, research, journalism, to design management. Icograda emphasizes the role of communication designer in society and the industrial world.

World Graphic Design Day has been celebrated since 1995, decades after Icograda was founded. World Graphic Design Day is commemorated as momentum for designers to reflect back on the role of the world of visual communication in world civilization.

The commemoration is, on World Graphic Design Day, designers are invited to optimize the role of their network. They are also encouraged to improve communication to address gaps between humans through communication design.

What is graphic design?

Quoting from various sources, graphic design is the art of communication through writing, space, and images. Graphic design is part of visual communication.

The science of graphic design includes visual arts, typography, layout, and interaction design. Interestingly, many sources mention Henry Cole, a figure of British education as an important figure who sparked the development of this science.

As a prominent and influential educational figure in design education in England, Henry convinced the British government of the importance of design. At that time a journal entitled Journal of Design and Manufactures was compiled.

Henry then held The Great Exhibition. The exhibition was held to celebrate the emergence of modern industrial technology and Victorian design.

What is the history of graphic design development?

The word "graphic design" was first used in 1922, in an essay entitled New Kind of Printing Calls for New Design. The essay was written by William Addison Dwiggins, a designer from the United States (US).

Several years later, in 1928 to be precise, Jan Tschichold formulated the basic principles of modern typography in his book, New Typography. Tshcichold is one of the most influential typographers in graphic design we know today.

Apart from Tschichold, there are other names, namely Bauhaus, Herbert Bayer and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and El Lissitzky. It was they who pioneered the production techniques that were eventually used throughout the 20th century.

In the following years, graphic design began to be widely recognized and widely applied. The need for graphic design increased rapidly after World War II.

Graphic design is used in a lot of advertising and product packaging. In the United States (US), 1937 was the most influential period in the development of the graphic design.

The trigger was the transfer of the Bauhaus School from Germany to Chicago. Famous names among them are Adrian Frutiger. He is the designer for Univers and Frutiger fonts.

After that, there is also Paul Rand. Paul is known for the Bauhaus principles he faithfully applied in advertising and logo design from the late 1930s until his death in 1996. Since then graphic design has continued to expand.

Industrially, the development of graphic design grows along with the development of consumerism. This condition had given rise to controversy among many design communities.

They published the First Things First manifesto, which was first published in 1964 and republished in 1999 in Emigre magazine. The growth of consumerism continues to spur the development of graphic design science.

Indonesian graphic designers

The development of the graphic design industry has contributed to the birth of many prominent practitioners. Call it Rudy VanderLans, Erik Spiekermann, Ellen Lupton, and Rick Poynor. Domestically, a number of graphic designer names have also made various achievements.

Henricus Kusbiantoro

The name Henricus Kusbiantoro is one of the top Indonesian graphic designers. The graduate of the Bandung Engineering Institute (ITB) is closely associated with the world's leading brand and logo consultant, Landor.

After leaving ITB, Henricus continued his education at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. Henricus received the title of 'Highest Achievement' when he graduated from the Pratt Institute.

At Landor, Henricus served as one of the art directors. The man from Bandung is known to have a high interest in puppet illustrations. While studying at that time, Henricus also pursued a career at Pushpn Studio.

Pushpin Studio is a company founded by legendary US graphic designer Seymor Chwast and I Love New York logo designer Milton Glaser. After leaving Pushpin, Henricus worked for a number of other international companies.

Rini Sugianto

There is also the name Rini Sugianto. A graduate of Parahyangan University (Unpar), Bandung, West Java, she is involved in various important film projects, such as The Adventure of Tintin and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Graduated from Unpar with a field in 3D digital technology, Rini continued her studies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Rini graduated in 2005 from that campus.

After that, Rini worked for Weta Studio in New Zealand as a character animator. At Weta Studio, Rini participated in the production of the film The Avengers, Iron Man 3, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Marsha Chikita
