This achievement beat the highest record previously achieved by the Bridgerton series with 82 million viewers in 28 days. Netflix counts viewership with two minutes viewed as the total view.
The 111 million viewers got within 17 days since the Squid Game series was released through Netflix.
Since it was first released, the Squid Game series has received special attention from international audiences. This South Korean series immediately ranked first in 90 countries when it was released last September.
Squid Game is directly side by side with the Money Heist, Dark, and Lupine series which get the same attention.
This popularity was also not predicted by director Hwang Dong Hyuk and the Squid Game players. Park Hae Soo, one of the actors even stated, “I also think the series will be successful because (the story is) about extreme play. However, I didn't think it would be this big. I started to feel his popularity after receiving a lot of messages from people overseas.”
Squid Game tells the story of 456 contestants who compete for 45.6 billion won through a series of games. However, if they lose, their lives will be replaced.
All episodes of Squid Game can be watched via Netflix.
