JAKARTA - The film Tale of the Land premiered at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in the New Currents program on October 4. The film produced by KawanKawan Media is the debut of writer and director Loeloe Hendra.

The broadcast was attended by director Loeloe Hendra, along with producers Yulia Evina Bhara and Amerta Kusuma, as well as actors in the films Shenina Cinnamon, Arswendy Bening Swara, and Yusuf Mahardika.

Tale of the Land centers on a Dayak girl named May, played by Shenina Cinnamon. May is haunted by the trauma of her parents' death in a land conflict, which makes her unable to set foot on the ground.

May lives with his grandfather, Tuha (played by Arswendy Bening Swara), in a floating house floating over a lake far from the mainland.

For director Loeloe Hendra, May's character is an allegory that reflects the challenges faced by indigenous peoples around the world whose homeland continues to change due to the pressure of the modern world.

Writer and director Loeloe Hendra stated, in his debut film, he was very interested in exploring how to use fantasy genres not only to evoke imagination and wonder, but also to sharpen our perception of reality.

Loeloe, who spent his childhood in the middle of the forest of Kalimantan, is filled with stories related to nature, wonders, fairy tales, traditions and culture every day.

In Kalimantan, nowadays, a beautiful landscape must coexist with massive deforestation of forests, and indigenous peoples are devoted to the limitations between tradition and modernity. Through the fantasy genre, I want to create a world where my characters will thrive in this religious space and the persistent tension between wonder and reality, between logic and fantasy, and between land and water, said writer and director Loeloe Hendra in an official statement.
