JAKARTA - Director David Lynch announced that he has emphysema which makes him unable to work as a director as usual. Even so, he assured fans that he will not retire from his position as a director.

Quoting NME, David Lynch admitted that he was diagnosed with emphysema. Emphysema is a disease that attacks the lungs because the air sacs in the lungs start to run out, causing someone to have difficulty breathing. The cause of this condition is the habit of smoking, which was confirmed by David Lynch.

The Dune director felt unable to go out because he was worried about being infected with COVID-19 which would affect his health condition.

"I got emphysema from smoking for a long time and I stayed at home whether I liked it or not," said David Lynch.

"It would be very bad for me if I got sick, even just a cold. So I can only walk short distances before I run out of oxygen," he explained.

He last directed the film Inland Empire in 2006 and he has no plans to retire from the film industry. With his current condition, David Lynch confirmed that he is not retiring but will eventually direct from outside the filming location.

"I will try to direct remotely, if that happens. But I don't like that concept," David Lynch said.

After the interview, David Lynch released a statement that he learned that his emphysema condition was caused by his smoking habit.

"It is true that I have emphysema from years of smoking. I can say that I really enjoy smoking, the smell, lighting it up but there is a cost to be paid and the price is emphysema," David Lynch wrote on his X account.

"I recently had a test and the good news is that I am fine except for the emphysema. I am filled with joy and I am not retiring. I want you all to know that I appreciate your concern," he said.

In addition to directing films, David Lynch is also still active as a musician with a new album due out this year. The album is titled Cellophane Memories with Chrystabell.
