JAKARTA - Sad news came from the world of cinema. The hit producer who worked on the Avatar franchise and the film cap, Jon Landau, was declared dead of cancer on Friday, July 5.

Landau is the producer who is director James Cameron's partner in producing the four most successful films of all time. He was born on July 30 in New York in 1960 and the son of producer pair Ely and Edie Landau.

Jon Landau started working with Cameron when he worked in 20th Century Fox. When he left the company, James Cameron asked if he was interested in reading the script for his film that was revealed was him.

This film is the first film to achieve 1 billion US dollars in theaters. Landau also bagged an Oscar afterore won the Best Film.

After that, Jon Landau and James Cameron worked together to make films like Avatar (2009), Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). Both films also got success which almost slipped into the film

James Cameron made an official statement containing tribute to his best friend. It is known that they last met at the Los Angeles Chinese Theater to attend a hand and foot signing ceremony to celebrate the success of Avatar: The Way of Water.

Avatar's family mourns the passing of our friend and leader, Jon Landau. His joke, his personal magnet, and great passion made our Avatar world run for two decades," James Cameron wrote on Sunday, July 7.

The idea is not only films that he produces but a personal example that he builds, persistent, caring, inclusive, tireless, broad-minded, and truly unique. He produces great films, not with power but by spreading warmth and joy in making films, "he continued.

"He inspired us all to be and give our best, every day. I have lost a friend, and my closest collaborator for 31 years. Part of me has been torn apart," concluded James Cameron.

Jon Landau and James Cameron plan to design five Avatar films. The third film is planned to air on December 19, 2025 and the fifth film is planned to air in 2031.

Jon Landau died at the age of 63.
