5 Movies About Great Women That Are Suitable To Watch On International Women's Day

JAKARTA - March 8 is celebrated as International Women's Day (ICW). This year, this historic day carries the theme Choose To Challenge, which celebrates women's efforts to fight for a more equal future, with the courage to challenge gender bias and inequality in various fields.

There are a number of movies suitable to watch on International Women's Day which falls this Monday.

Mulan (1998)

Mulan is an animated film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, for Walt Disney Pictures and released in 1998.

The film is based on the Chinese legend Hua Mulan, and is Disney's 36th animated feature and the ninth animated film produced and released during the Disney Renaissance.

The movie was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook. The plot of the film takes place in China during the Han Dynasty, where Fa Mulan, daughter of Fa Zhou's old warrior, disguises herself as a man to replace her father during general military service to fight the Hun invasion.

Disney also adapted Mulan into live-action last year. Both versions of the film can be seen on Disney + Hotstar.

Hidden Figures (2016)

Hidden Figures is a 2016 American biographical drama movie directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder.

The movie is based on the 2016 non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly about an African-American female mathematician who works for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Space Race.

The film stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculates flight trajectories for Project Mercury and other missions. The film also features Octavia Spencer as a supervisor and NASA mathematician Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as NASA engineer Mary Jackson.

Kim Ji-young: Born 1982 (2019)

The movie Kim Ji Young: Born 1982 tells the story of a young mother in her 30s who lives happily with her little family. Ji Young (Jung Yu-Mi) has a loving husband named Jung Dae Hyun (Gong Yoo) and their little daughter. However, after getting married, she stopped working and became a housewife.

This movie was adapted from the novel by Cho Nam-Joo and had become a controversy in its home country. However, not a few people were moved after reading and watching this movie.

Little Women (2019)

Little Women is the seventh film adapted from the 1868 novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott. The film tells the life of March's sisters - Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth - in Concord, Massachusetts, during the 19th century.

The film stars an ensemble of Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, Meryl Streep, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, James Norton, Louis Garrel, and Chris Cooper.

Little Women won six nominations at the 2020 Academy Awards, and won Best Costume Design. Director and scriptwriter Greta Gerwig has also been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)

The latest Disney movie Raya and the Last Dragon takes fans on an epic and exciting journey in the fantasy world of Kumandra, where humans and dragons have always lived side by side.

Raya became the new face of Disney Princess in this era, who was brave and freed her from the romantic side that is usually synonymous with Disney Princess movies in general.
