Got Strong Reaction On Twitter, Constance Wu Ever Tried Suicide

JAKARTA - It turns out that actress Constance Wu admitted that she had attempted suicide three years ago following the strong reaction that appeared on social media Twitter regarding Wu's comments on the update of the sitcom "Fresh Off the Boat".

"I'm scared to go back to social media because I almost lost my life because of it: three years ago, when I made a careless tweet about an update on a TV show I was starring in, it sparked outrage and disapproval online," he wrote. Wu through a statement on his Twitter account, quoted Friday.

Wu, who is best known for starring in the film "Crazy Rich Asians", is back on Twitter for the first time after a hiatus of nearly three years.

Quoted from Variety, Friday, earlier in 2019, Wu had expressed his frustration regarding the sitcom "Fresh Off the Boat" being renewed for a new season.

At that time, he wrote down his frustration to mention swear words. However, the comments drew criticism because Wu was seen as ungrateful for the success of the television show.

"I started to feel like I didn't deserve to live anymore. That I was a disgrace to AsAms (Asian-Americans), and they would be better off without me," wrote the Crazy Rich Asians star as quoted from Antara.

"Fortunately, a friend found me and took me to the ER," Wu added.

Wu clarified his comments posted in 2019 by saying that his frustration over the "Fresh Off the Boat" update meant he had to turn down other, more challenging projects.

After the suicide attempt, Wu put his career aside to focus on mental health. In his statement, Wu announced a new book he is writing entitled “Making a Scene” and called for wider discussion of mental health among Asian Americans.

“AsAms (Asian-Americans) don't talk enough about mental health. While we quickly celebrated the victory of representation, there was a lot of evasion around more uncomfortable issues in our community,” wrote Constance Wu.
