4 Stages Experienced By Body Organs During Intimate Relations

JAKARTA - An intimate relationship made by a married couple is not only about pleasure. However, it also involves a complex biological series on the body.

"If you have sex, you have to go into a zone where your brain is not overdriven," said obstetrician and gynecologist consultant Dr. Orphan Frodsham, quoted from The Guardian, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

The body gives reactions during intercourse. In general, the cycle of sexual response is divided into four main stages, namely stimulation, passion (plateau), orgasm, and relaxation (resolution).

1. Stimulation or arousal stage

At this stage, it usually starts in seconds, after physical and emotional stimulation. In men, penises at this stage start to have an erection.

Meanwhile, in women, the vagina begins to produce lubricants and genital organs experience mild swelling. Both can also feel an increasing rate of heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory frequency.

2. Advertisement or plate stage

At this stage, the condition of both men and women is getting more intense. Men will feel a full erection and their testes are attracted towards the scrotum.

Women will experience blood flow increasing towards the pelvis, vaginal walls thickening, and clitoris becoming more sensitive. Men and women will also feel muscles starting to stretch and skin that can appear red.

3. Stage of orgasm

This stage is the peak of sexual response and usually takes place briefly. In men there is ejaculation accompanied by rhythmic contraction, while in women the rhythmic contraction occurs in the walls of the vagina and uterus.

4. Phase of relaxation or resolution

In this last stage, the bodies of men and women will return to normal conditions. Penis returns to an erection condition, and a period of refraction appears, or cannot immediately have an orgasm anymore.

Meanwhile, in women, their reproductive organs return to their original position and some can experience repeated orgasm if stimulation continues.
