JAKARTA - Britain and Sweden are working together to provide Ukraine with 16 Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets worth 300 million euros (around Rp6.184 trillion).

"I announce that the UK will provide support worth 300 million euros in cooperation with Sweden to provide 16 new advanced aircraft to help defend the airspace of Ukraine," said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his visit to Kyiv, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, July 16.

Meanwhile, the British Prime Minister's Office detailed that the fighter jets were targeted to be fully supplied to Kyiv in 2029.

"This funding will help Ukraine deploy a squadron of 16 Gripen E fighter jets by 2029," the official statement said.

The aid package reportedly includes training for pilots and technicians, the provision of simulators, spare parts, and other supporting equipment needed to deploy the aircraft to the front lines.

Previously on July 8, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that Sweden would supply a total of 32 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine, of which 16 units were used aircraft.

In early July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyyy also confirmed that Ukraine and Sweden had signed an agreement to purchase 16 new Gripen E fighter jets, which are scheduled to arrive for the Ukrainian armed forces in early 2027.

Meanwhile, Russia has repeatedly stressed that arms supplies from the West to Ukraine will only hinder efforts to resolve the conflict and directly involve NATO countries.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov again warned that any shipment carrying weapons supplies to Ukraine would be a legitimate military target for Russia.
