JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) continues to accelerate the completion of the Mbay Dam construction in Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
As of March 31, 2026, the cumulative physical progress of the dam had reached 92.12 percent.
The Mbay dam is expected to strengthen water resilience while supporting agricultural productivity in the region.
Minister PU Dody Hanggodo emphasized the importance of water resources infrastructure in supporting national food security.
"We agree that water resources infrastructure is very important to achieve food self-sufficiency. One example is the construction of dams which are then channeled through the primary, secondary, and tertiary irrigation systems directly to agricultural land," said Dody as quoted from a written statement, Saturday, April 25.
The Mbay Dam is designed to have a storage capacity of 51.74 million cubic meters.
The infrastructure will increase irrigation services to 5,899 hectares of agricultural land.
In addition, the Mbay Dam will also provide raw water of 0.21 cubic meters per second and has the potential to reduce flooding by 283.33 cubic meters per second.
The government considers the existence of dams to be one of the important infrastructures in supporting agricultural productivity and food security, especially in areas with limited water availability.
The construction of the Mbay Dam is carried out through two construction packages and one supervision package that runs in parallel.

The work includes the construction of the main dam, access roads, relocation of national roads as well as operation and maintenance facilities.
In addition to physical construction, the PU Ministry also continues to encourage the gradual completion of land procurement through coordination with local governments and communities.
"We are not only pursuing targets, but also maintaining quality and usefulness. All work must be in accordance with standards, so that this dam can really be used to the fullest by the community," he said.
With the progress nearing the final stage, the PU Ministry is optimistic that the Mbay Dam can immediately provide benefits, especially in increasing water resilience, supporting agricultural production and encouraging economic growth in the NTT region.
