Vice President Gibran Mourns NTT Earthquake, Ensures Maximum Handling

JAKARTA - Vice President (Wapres) Gibran Rakabuming Raka conveyed his condolences and concern to the people affected by the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that shook East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and ensured that the government would handle it to the maximum.

"My thoughts and prayers are with all the affected people, especially the families who lost their family members, suffered damage to their homes, and those who are currently still in a difficult situation due to the disaster," said Vice President Gibrandalam in a statement quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, August 15.

Regarding the earthquake that occurred in Nagekeo Regency, NTT, the Vice President ensured that the government would make maximum efforts to ensure emergency handling, evacuation, and data collection on the impact of disasters.

Not only that, he said the government would move quickly and try to distribute assistance to affected people quickly and in a coordinated manner.

"Hopefully all the people of NTT will be given strength and safety, and the handling and recovery process can run as well as possible," said Gibran.

Previously, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook the Nagekeo Regency area on Saturday morning. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the tectonic earthquake occurred at a depth of 15 kilometers centered in the sea at a distance of 38 kilometers northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo, on Saturday at 04.58 WIB.

Strong tremors were felt for about a minute in Nagekeo, Sikka, West Manggarai, spreading to Bima (NTB) and a number of South Sulawesi areas such as Jeneponto, Selayar Islands, and Maros.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that as of Saturday morning, two people died due to a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that shook the Nagekeo Regency area, NTT.

Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Berton SP Panjaitan in Jakarta, Saturday, said the two fatalities were recorded in the El Say Harbor area, Sikka Regency.
