JAKARTA - The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) will use places of worship, especially mosques along the homecoming route, as resting places or rest areas for travelers during Lebaran 2026.
Minister of Transportation (Menhub) Dudy Purwagandhi also strengthened cross-ministerial coordination in order to prepare for the 2026 Lebaran Transportation. This was done through a meeting with Minister of Religion Nasaruddin Umar.
Dudy said the use of places of worship as resting places or rest areas for travelers is intended primarily for private vehicle and motorcycle users.
Furthermore, Dudy said, his party needed the support of the Ministry of Religion so that mosques on the homecoming route could be used as a safe and comfortable temporary transit space. It is hoped that mosques will provide basic facilities such as parking areas, toilets, clean water, lighting, and resting areas for the community.
"Through the use of mosques located on the homecoming route, we hope that people can rest comfortably during the journey. We will also prepare supporting facilities so that travelers can rest safely," said Dudy in an official statement, Tuesday, February 24.
In addition to houses of worship, the Ministry of Transportation has also prepared other rest points on the homecoming route, including terminals and weighbridges, to help relieve drivers' fatigue and reduce the risk of traffic accidents during the Lebaran homecoming and return period.
Furthermore, Dudy emphasized the importance of synergy between the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Religion in the implementation of Lebaran Transportation.
According to Dudy, the momentum of Eid al-Fitr is not only related to the movement of a large number of people, but also has a strong spiritual and social dimension.
"This is a very good synergy between the Ministry of Religion and the Ministry of Transportation, considering that the momentum of Eid al-Fitr not only has a very large mobility dimension, but also has a deep spiritual and social meaning for our community," said Dudy.
Based on the results of a survey on the potential movement of the community during Lebaran 2026, the Ministry of Transportation estimates that around 143 million people will travel during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period. This figure is slightly lower than the results of the previous year's survey which reached 146 million people.
However, the government still anticipates a potential spike in mobility. The majority of people's trips during Lebaran are expected to be for homecoming and visiting relatives, with a share of around 66 percent of the total survey respondents.
"Last year, the realization of people's movement even reached around 154 million people. Therefore, we still anticipate the possibility of an increase in people's travel before the holidays," said Dudy.
