PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) plans to replace a coal-fueled Steam Power Plant (PLTU) with liquefied natural gas (LNG) or liquefied natural gas by 2027.

PTFI President Director Tony Wenas explained that the reason for replacing PLTU with LNG was the company's move to switch to cleaner energy.

"We will replace it in the process of replacing our Coal PLTU with LNG, LNG is much cleaner," he said, Thursday, August 28.

Based on the plan, Tony continued, PTFI will start using the LNG generator in 2027 with a capacity of 270 megawatts (MW).

Tony estimates that the company's addition of decarbonization will reach 30 percent.

"We will replace it in the process of replacing our Coal PLTU with LNG, right? LNG is much cleaner," explained Tony.

He added that PTFI had actually been decarbonizing for a long time.

Tony gave an example, in transporting copper ore, his company has taken advantage of electric trains.

In fact, Tony continued, previously PTFI actively used fossil fuel trucks to transport 200,000 tons per day.

"The electric train can carry 150,000 tons per day. So with that, the carbon emissions by 28 percent have been reduced," he said.
