JAKARTA - The level of rice productivity that consistently increases every year, the East Java region is the main backbone in supplying national food needs, especially rice.

The Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, revealed that his province is the largest contributor to rice nationally, with Ngawi being one of the main producing regions.

He conveyed this during a working visit to Ngawi Regency, Sunday (23/5/2025).

"Ngawi is one of the areas with the highest rice productivity in Indonesia from year to year," he said, as quoted by ANTARA.

Khofifah explained, until May 23, 2025, rice reserves in the Bulog area of East Java reached 868,208 tons. This amount is equivalent to 22.45 percent of the total national stock and makes East Java the province with the largest rice stock contribution in Indonesia.

He added that the East Java agricultural sector continues to show significant growth, both in its contribution to the Provincial Gross Regional Domestic Product (GDP) and national GDP. Ngawi Regency is a real example of an area that has succeeded in developing a sustainable agricultural system with optimal results.

In supporting this achievement, Khofifah emphasized the importance of the availability of agricultural production facilities such as irrigation water, superior seeds, fertilizers, as well as agricultural tools and machinery (alsintan). He also appreciated the application of organic fertilizer in Ngawi as part of the concept of Sustainable Environmental Friendly Agriculture (PRLB).

"With the support of technology and production facilities, the planting period in Ngawi can reach seven times in two years. This shows extraordinary efficiency and productivity," he said.

Khofifah invites all stakeholders in the agricultural sector, including farmer and Gapoktan groups, to continue to maintain and strengthen agricultural conditions in East Java. This is important to ensure regional and national food security is maintained.

According to projections from the East Java Agriculture and Food Security Service, the total rice production throughout 2025 is estimated to reach 12.7 million tons of Dry Giling Grain (GKG), with rice yields of around 8.19 million tons. This figure has increased from the achievement in 2024 which amounted to 9.22 million tons of GKG.

On the opportunity to accompany Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman in Ngawi, Governor Khofifah also said that Bulog Kanwil East Java had absorbed rice yields actively. From the February 'May 2025 absorption target of 585,581 tons of rice equivalent, as much as 478,757 tons (81.76 percent) have been absorbed until May 22, 2025.

The contribution of Ngawi Regency in the figure is also seen from the local DKPP data, where rice production in 2024 rose from 771 thousand tons to 778 thousand tons of GKG. Meanwhile, the planting area in that year reached 144,896 hectares. By 2025, the Ngawi Regency Government targets the expansion of planting up to 180 thousand hectares as part of the national food self-sufficiency program.
