JAKARTA - PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) continues to strengthen its exploration portfolio as an effort to maintain national energy resilience amid increasing energy needs and the challenge of natural production decline in existing work areas.
In the last five years, Pertamina's subsidiary has expanded its operating area through the acquisition of new work areas (WK) as well as the implementation of Joint Studies (JS) with a number of global energy companies.
Until July 2026, PHE has recorded 12 Joint Studies consisting of 10 studies that are still running, one study has been completed, and one other study is still awaiting government approval.
Based on data from the Directorate General of Oil and Gas (Ditjen Migas) as of April 2026, PHE is also the company with the most number of Joint Studies in Indonesia.
The joint study was carried out with a number of international energy companies, such as Petronas, BP, ENI, KUFPEC, SK Earthon, PetroChina, POSCO, TPAO, and Woodside.
In addition to Indonesia, PHE has also expanded its collaboration with Management Petroleum Malaysia (MPM) through the Technical Evaluation Agreement (TEA) scheme in a number of oil and gas blocks in Malaysia.
In addition to expanding exploration cooperation, PHE also added a work area portfolio. During the period 2023-2026, the company obtained eight new exploration work areas in Indonesia, namely Bunga, Peri Mahakam, East Natuna, Melati, Binaiya, Lavender, Bobara, and North Ketapang, as well as one work area in Malaysia, namely Block SK-510.
In all these working areas, PHE is carrying out various exploration programs in accordance with the commitment of definite work, ranging from geological and geophysical studies, acquisition of seismic data, to exploration drilling to accelerate the discovery of new oil and gas reserves.
Exploration Director of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Asep Samsul Arifin said the expansion strategy is part of efforts to build a healthy and sustainable exploration portfolio.
"Exploration is a long-term investment for the sustainability of the upstream oil and gas industry. Through the expansion of the work area, strengthening collaboration with global partners, and the implementation of increasingly advanced exploration technologies," he said in an official statement, Sunday, July 26.
According to Asep, collaboration with international energy companies not only opens up opportunities for the development of new work areas, but also serves as a means of exchanging technology, knowledge, and technical capabilities to identify the potential of undeveloped oil and gas basins.
"We continue to build a quality portfolio to increase the opportunity to discover new oil and gas resources. This step is part of PHE's commitment to supporting national energy security and independence," said Asep.
PHE's aggressive performance in expanding the exploration area has also been recognized globally.
Based on S&P Global 2026 data for the period 2021-2025, PHE was recorded as the National Oil Company (NOC) with the largest addition to new exploration area in the world, namely more than 90,000 square kilometers.
This achievement surpasses a number of other national oil and gas companies such as Petronas, PTTEP, ADNOC, and Sinopec.
Going forward, PHE stated that it would continue to expand its portfolio of exploration and production work areas, both domestically and abroad, as well as accelerating the commercialization of all exploration potential.
This step is expected to strengthen national oil and gas production while supporting the energy self-sufficiency target.
PHE will also continue to invest in the management of upstream oil and gas operations and businesses in accordance with the principles of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).
