All Pertamina International Shipping Domestic Ships Use B40

PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) announced that as many as 189 ships operated by PIS for national energy distribution have used biodiesel B40 as fuel since January 2025.

"In accordance with the direction of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), all ships operated by PIS, namely 189 ships serving national energy distributions, have used B40 to achieve energy security while supporting green and sustainable energy," said PIS Fleet Director Muhammad Irfan Zainul Fikri, Thursday, February 6.

Irfan explained that this strategic step was part of PIS' efforts to encourage carbon emission reduction as well as support national energy transition efforts.

Just so you know, B40 is a hybrid fuel that uses biodiesel from plant sources. Since its introduction, B40 has shown better efficiency in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, thus becoming a more environmentally friendly solution for the transportation sector, including the shipping industry.

He added that PIS has also implemented various green technological innovations to support this vision. One significant step is the application of energy saving devices (ESD) in several PIS fleets. Since it was first implemented in 2022, ships equipped with this technology have shown a significant increase in fuel efficiency.

Furthermore, PIS also adopts dual-fuel technology that allows the use of alternative fuels and fossils in turn or simultaneously. The use of dual-fuel technology has proven to save about 30 percent of the total fuel consumption of ships.

In the medium-term plan, PIS is also targeting a significant increase in the contribution of green businesses by 34 percent by 2034. This effort is accompanied by a 32 percent reduction in emissions strategy in the same year, in line with global commitments from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

PIS' green commitment also received appreciation. Currently, PIS has won the BBB ESG score from Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI), which shows that the company's performance in environmental, social, and governance aspects is at a solid level. This achievement is clear evidence of PIS's commitment to carrying out sustainable business practices.

"In the future, we hope that PIS can become a leading player in the green shipping industry, encouraging the transformation towards a more environmentally friendly operation. For this reason, close collaboration is needed between stakeholders and regulators to create a truly environmentally friendly shipping industry ecosystem," concluded Irfan.
