JAKARTA - The government is pushing for the acceleration of the construction of the Semarang Toll Road (Demak Section 1 (Kaligawe) for 10.64 km. The presence of infrastructure built on the sea is crucial because it plays an important role not only for increasing connectivity but also for overcoming tidal flooding in Semarang and its surroundings. PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) also supports the construction of the Semarang Toll Road "Demak Section 1A and 1B by supplying 22,184 tons of cement until July 2025.
The Semarang Toll Road Section 1 is a National Strategic Project targeted to be completed in 2027. This toll road is expected to cut Semarang-Demak travel time from 30 minutes (when normal) to 60 minutes (during traffic jams), to only 10 to 20 minutes.
Of the total length of 10.64 km, 6.7 km of which serves as a sea embankment to deal with tidal flooding that has hit Kaligawe, Genuk, Sayung, and Terboyo industrial areas.
Previously, GIS also contributed to the construction of the 16.31 km Semarang 'Demak Section 2 (Sayung-Demak) toll road which was inaugurated in 2023 by supplying 156,905 tons of cement.
GIS Corporate Secretary, Vita Mahreyni said, the Semarang 'Demak Toll Road is a multifunctional project and an important part of national infrastructure development that will reduce the traffic load on the Pantura route, Central Java and become a solution for flood management. To support the development of this strategic project, SIG supplies UltraPro cement which has optimal power to support the strengthening of construction in the long term.
The Semarang Toll Road will become the lifeblood of the regional economy as smooth community mobility and logistics distribution increase access to local and tourism production centers, as well as the resolution of tidal flooding problems. Thus, it also helps improve the quality of life of the community to be better. This project also adds to the important infrastructure list in Indonesia which was built using GIS cement products," said Vita Mahreyni, in her statement, Thursday, August 14.
Vita Mahreyni added, GIS has various types of special type cement products that have optimal resistance to sulfate acid and chloride penetration in order to support infrastructure development in coastal areas including giant sea wall embankments. Alternative GIS portland cement products have advantages from a technical point of view with ease of work, strong pressure on early and final times that are better and last longer.

The special SIG-type cement includes sea-resistant cement (DuPro+ SBC), acid-resistant cement and salt (DuPro+ LH), cement for extreme environments (DuPro+ HSR), cement for beach construction (DuPro+ MSR), and cement for mass casting and soil stabilization (MaxStrength Pro). These SIG products have been applied to a number of projects in Indonesia, including Suramadu Bridge, Youtefa Bridge, Bali Mandara Toll Road, Sanur Pier, Bogowinto Flood Control, Natuna State Border Post, Makassar New Port, and Patimban Port.
"As a leading building material producer in Indonesia, GIS has a wide selection of products that can be adjusted to its type of designation, as a form of support in the success of development in Indonesia. Apart from its diverse types, GIS products also offer the best quality and optimal strength with long-term durability, which makes it a wise choice in development activities," said Vita Mahreyni.
