PLN Takes Advantage Of 3.4 Million TonS OF FABA To Build Infrastructure

PT PLN (Persero) reports that throughout 2024 it has utilized 3.4 million tons of Fly Ash and Bottom Ash (FABA) or ash from coal burning from Steam Power Plants (PLTU) from 47 PLTUs as raw materials for infrastructure used by the community.

In detail, the six main sectors utilizing FABA throughout 2024 include a road hardening layer of 1.73 million tons or 50.84 percent, a cement substitution of 1.24 million tons or 36.24 percent, a concrete raw material of 227.5 thousand tons or 8.13 percent, precast concrete such as paving, concrete, cansteen, U dipch, and tetrapod of 92.4 thousand tons, material Non Acid Forming 49.6 thousand tons and land acquisition of 8,000 tons.

"With various innovations and supporting regulations, PLN Group is optimistic that the use of FABA will continue to increase, provide economic benefits as well as support environmental sustainability efforts," said PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo, Thursday, February 6.

He added that currently, FABA has also been used by more than 200 MSMEs and community groups for various products, creating new jobs and supporting the improvement of village infrastructure. One of them is the construction of public facilities that use FABA materials in Tanah Merah Village, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

The head of Tanah Merah Village, Lazarus Dillak, appreciated PLN for contributing to improving the economy of the people of Tanah Merah Village through the use of FABA. According to him, the public facilities built from FABA materials have an impact on improving the economy of the local community.

PLN provides assistance with public facilities in the form of footpaths, water reservoirs, hand washing facilities and stages made from FABA. Hopefully this can be a catalyst for increasing productivity and opening up wider economic opportunities," he said.

Utilization of FABA is also implemented for the IKN toll road project, where FABA is used as a mixture of ship collision protection (fander) at the Bentang Panjang Bridge on Balang Island, and the Bantang Short Bridge duplication project on Balang Island.

In addition, FABA is also widely used in the mining sector to subtitute Non Acid Forming material or prevent the formation of Mining acid water. This is reinforced by the stipulation of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 9264: 2024 concerning FABA as a coating material for the Potential Acid Forming material on September 2, 2024.

The use of FABA to prevent the formation of mining acid has been carried out by PT Guguk Tinggi Coal (GTC) in Sawahlunto, West Sumatra from PLTU Ombilin. In the future, FABA PLTU Bukit Asam will also be used by the PT Bukit Asam mine.

The use of FABA in the infrastructure sector also has a positive impact on the environment. Its utilization in the manufacture of Portland Composite Cement (PCC) cement and a mixture of concrete has contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 325,021 tons of CO2e. Several large companies have used PLN's FABA PLTU for cement raw materials including Semen Indonesia, Semen Bosowa, Semen Grobogan and Semen Padang.
