SURABAYA - The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) said the level of consumption of Indonesian milk was still low compared to neighboring countries.
Deputy Minister of Industry (Wamenperin) Faisol Riza said that Indonesian people's milk consumption is only 16.1 liters per capita/year equivalent to fresh milk.
"Currently, the level of milk consumption per capita for the Indonesian people is still 16.1 liters / capita / year equivalent to fresh milk, below other ASEAN countries," said Faisol during an agenda visit to the PT Nestle Indonesia Kejayan Unit, Pasuruan, East Java, Thursday, December 5.
Faisal explained that the level of consumption of fresh milk in ASEAN countries is higher than Indonesia. For example, Malaysia which reaches 50.9 liters per capita/year, Singapore is 46.1 liters per capita/year and Vietnam is 20.1 liters per capita/year.
According to him, there are three reasons why the level of fresh milk consumption is still low in Indonesia. First, the public's low awareness that milk is part of the protein needed by the community for growth.
"The second is indeed a matter of the milk market which has not been flat," he said.
Third, the low purchasing power of the people. Thus, said Faisal, the community does not use milk as the main need for the family.
"And maybe in the past, people's purchasing power has not yet led to milk as a family need," he said.
However, according to Faisal, along with the transformation of people's lifestyles that have become healthier and the increasing demand for products with high nutrients after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Industry believes that the market opportunity for dairy products will continue to grow in the future.
"We hope that PT Nestle Indonesia will remain committed to continuing to collaborate and innovate in developing its partnership program with dairy farmers, so that it can increase farmer productivity to produce fresh milk as industrial raw material," he said.
