Minister Basuki Promises To Improve Flash Flood Areas In Ternate, Will Create 20 Embankments

JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Basuki Hadimuljono will immediately repair river flow and build infrastructure along rivers or die times in flash flood areas in Rua, Ternate City, North Maluku.

Basuki emphasized that his party would repair the river path and build 20 Sabo dams along the southern part of the river.

The reason is, Ternate Island has 15 deaths or goods.

"We will build 20 Sabo dams spread across the southern part of the river, which we will design until the end of the year. Each river has at least 2 Sabos. In the north there are already 22 Sabos," Basuki said in a written statement, Tuesday, September 3.

Basuki assessed that Sabo dam functions to withstand the flow of water and sediment materials that have the potential to hit settlements.

With the sabo dam, flood early warnings can be given.

It is known that the flood that occurred on Sunday, August 25, 2024, caused the national road access in Rua Village to be cut off due to the accumulation of materials.

The flood caused 19 people to die, 23 houses were heavily damaged, 2 houses were missing, 1 unit of places of worship was heavily damaged, 1 elementary school unit was heavily damaged, 1 unit of the North Maluku River Basin Center (BWS) rainfall post was heavily damaged and 1 unit of the raw water pipeline was cut off.

The emergency response efforts carried out by the Ministry of PUPR, namely mobilizing 3 excavator units, 2 dump trucks and alerting 70 North Maluku BWS personnel.

Furthermore, the North Maluku Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (BPPW) also mobilized 1 dump truck unit, 8 public hydrant units, 2 water tankers and 25 personnel on standby.

In addition to emergency response efforts, the Ministry of PUPR together with the Ternate City Government (Pemkot) will also relocate residents affected by flash floods.

Basuki revealed that his party will build 50 new type 36 housing units as well as schools and prayer rooms.

"The material is in Bandung and we will bring it here. Hopefully the end of the month can arrive and we will immediately do it," he said.

Until now, national road access can be fully passed, the existing river flow has been opened and completed in measurement. The progress of cleaning and disposal of materials to the disposal area reaches 80 percent.
