JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has completed the construction of the Temef Dam in South Central Timor Regency (TTS), East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province.
PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said water availability is the key to development in NTT which has lower rainfall than other areas.
"Thus, dams that are built at large costs can be useful because the water is confirmed to flow to farmers' fields. In addition to utilizing irrigation services, dams are also expected to serve the community's domestic water needs through the construction of raw water networks and water treatment plants (IPA)," said Basuki in an official statement quoted on Monday, September 2.
The construction of the Temef Dam is divided into 4 work packages carried out from 2017-2024.
Package I was carried out by PT Waskita-Banggunusa (KSO).
Package II and III were carried out by PT Nindya-Bina Nusa Lestari (KSO) and Package IV by Waskita-Bahgia-Guntur (KSO).
"The total budget for the construction of this dam is IDR 2.7 trillion. The status of the Temef Dam is now complete and ready to be inaugurated," he said.
This dam has an inundation area of 297.78 hectares (ha) with a capacity volume of 45.79 million cubic meters.
The presence of this dam will provide benefits for irrigation covering an area of 4,500 ha consisting of irrigation areas (DI) Haekto and Malacca.
Meanwhile, Head of the NTT II River Basin Center (BWS) Fernando Rajagukgukguk said the presence of the temef Dam would provide benefits to the community in TTS Regency, NTT.
"The temef Dam will accommodate flood overflows from Maak Regency and the area around TTS Regency, NTT," he said.
The next benefit is flood control in the downstream area of the dam with flood reduction in Malacca Regency by 15 percent. Providing raw water with a discharge of 131 liters per second for residents of Polen District, East Noemuti District in TTS Regency and Malacca Regency as many as 28,000 families (KK).
The Temef Dam is one of seven dams built by the Ministry of PUPR in NTT Province under the leadership of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
With the completion of the Temef Dam, it is hoped that it will increase the number of water reservoirs that can support food and water security in the province.
