PT PLN (Persero) through the subholding of PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) will utilize green ammonia in the operation of the Labuan Steam Power Plant (PLTU) in Banten.

Efforts to accelerate this energy transition are reflected in the signing of a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PLN IP, PT Pupuk Kujang and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries (IHI Corporation).

PLN President Director IP Edwin Nugraha revealed that the use of green ammonia can reduce the use of coal for PLTU primary energy. The plan is that the use of green ammonia_will be implemented in the Banten 2 Labuan Generation Business Unit (UBP).

"PLTU Banten 2 Labuan will be used as a pilot project for the use of green ammonia in other PLTUs, if this has been done it will reduce the carbon emissions produced by the electricity sector," said Edwin, Wednesday, August 28.

To take advantage of green ammonia, he said, PLN Indonesia Power conducted a feasibility study by cooperating with PT Pupuk Kujang and IHI Corporation.

Through this collaboration PLN IP, IHI and Pupuk Kujang will review technical and economic aspects of the entire value chain starting from the supply of green ammonia to the application of combustion. In particular, IHI will handle technical studies related to demonstrations of ammonia burning, PLN IP will provide power plants and operational personnel, and Pupuk Kujang will handle production and supply of green ammonia.

Meanwhile, President Director of PT Pupuk Kujang Maryono said Pupuk Kujang supports collaboration in the use of green ammonia in reducing carbon emissions in power plants.

"As a green ammonia producer, Pupuk Kujang is very enthusiastic about being involved in this innovative study. This collaboration allows us to contribute to sustainable energy solutions exploring the potential of green ammonia that is in line with our commitment to environmental sustainability," said Maryono.

The associate director of IHI Corporation, Shinichi Takano welcomed the collaboration of technology in the energy transition, especially innovations related to green ammonia.

"We are honored to be working with PLN Indonesia Power and Pupuk Kujang, our ammonia technology can help transform energy in Indonesia, pave the way for a greener future," said Takano.
