JAKARTA - The government continues to accelerate the development of the digital economy, as a strategic pillar to realize the 2045 Indonesian Vision.

This commitment reflects a strong focus on the shift in the economy towards sustainable digital innovation.

Therefore, Indonesia is making regulations or regulations related to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

This follows the ratification of the Circular Letter of the Minister of Communication and Information Technology Number 9 of 2023 concerning Artificial Intelligence Ethics, on December 19, 2023.

Assistant Deputy IV for the Improvement of Manpower Productivity of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Chairul Saleh said that the digital economy sector needs creative people and innovation so that it can make anything, but it still needs to be limited, such as personal data and intellectual property rights in the use of AI.

"Yes, what I follow in Kominfo is still limited to issuing a circular. Because we regulate it, we have to be careful because if we limit it, the invoices will not grow," he explained after the media briefing on the development of digital economic policies, Wednesday, June 12.

In addition, Chairul gave an example of other cases such as royalties for singers, for example the use of AI in the case of the late Chrisye re-singing on social media how regulations can regulate royalties.

"That's exactly what we think needs to be focused on, not the development of the AI. Maybe we need an agile and adaptive regulation as well," he said.

According to Chairul, other steps can be taken with a hybrid or approach such as Regulatory Sandbox in fintech.

Previously, the Ministry of Communication and Information invited the collaboration of national and global digital exosystems in the preparation of regulations regarding artificial intelligence or Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie Setiadi encourages the intensification of cooperation with the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) to discuss AI's generating arrangements in Indonesia.

"Currently, Indonesia does not yet have a regulation framework related to AI. Meanwhile, it is only a circular letter and guidelines related to ethics. Therefore, we can work together to create a regulatory framework that is in accordance with the needs and developments of AI in the country," he said, Friday, April 19.

Arie stated that the preparation of regulations regarding AI requires consideration of fundamental aspects to minimize the risk of using technology that is increasingly being used by Indonesian citizens.

We know there are three important fundamentals about AI. First it must be safe. Second, this AI must be ethical, and finally have to trust each other. This concern certainly requires an adequate or comprehensive regulatory device, so that it can overcome the risks that arise from AI," he said.
