JAKARTA - The Ministry of Industry noted that the performance of the footwear and textile industry has grown higher at the beginning of this year.

This can be seen from the performance of the textile and finished clothing industry which grew expansively on an annual basis or year on year (yoy) in the first quarter of 2024 with a value of 5.90 percent and 2.64 percent, respectively. This is driven by the high demand for exports.

Director of the Ministry of Industry for Textile, Skin and Footwear (ITKAK) Adie Rochmanto Pandiangan said foreign demand for textile products and finished clothing including footwear increased by 7.34 percent (yoy) for textile products, 3.08 percent (yoy) for finished clothes and 12.56 percent (yoy) for footwear.

"This implies that the processing industry is still the main driving engine for the Indonesian economy," he said in his official statement, quoted Thursday, May 16.

For the textile industry, his party noted that in April 2024 there was an increase until it reached its expansion position since IKI was first released. Meanwhile, the clothing industry has continued to expand since the end of 2023 until now.

"In addition to export orders, stability of domestic household consumption also helps encourage the growth of the textile and finished clothing industry as well as the skin industry, leather goods and footwear. (driven) by the implementation of the 2024 General Election, national holidays, collective leave and Eid moments," he said.

Meanwhile, based on the BI manufacturing index (PMI-BI) supply in the first quarter of 2024, the textile and clothing industry has increased and is in an expansion phase with an index of 57.40 percent. Thus, the skin industry, leather and footwear goods also became 55.36 percent.

"In addition, the performance of the skin industry, leather goods and footwear in the second quarter of 2024 is even expected to be in the expansion phase with the highest index, which is 61.07 percent," he said.
