East Java's Economy In The First Quarter Of 2024 Supported By Transportation And Trade

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of East Java Province noted that the economy in the region increased in the first quarter of 2024 to reach Rp764.33 trillion compared to the fourth quarter of 2023 which was Rp749.48 trillion, due to the increased performance of the transportation and trade business fields.

"This means that the economy in East Java grew by Rp14.85 trillion compared to the fourth quarter of 2023 which was measured based on Gross Regional Domestic Product (GDP) at price. Meanwhile, GRDP at constant price in 2010 reached Rp470.63 trillion," said Head of BPS East Java Zulkipli, while reading the official Statistical News in Surabaya, quoted from Antara, Tuesday, May 7.

In addition, he said, there was procurement of electricity, gas, accommodation and food and drink which recorded relatively high growth.

"The largest successive source of growth is provided by the manufacturing, trade and construction industries," he said.

Not only that, the performance of the processing industry is supported by the increasing performance of the tobacco processing industry, the paper industry, the basic metal industry, and the furniture industry.

"Meanwhile, the performance of the trade sector is still growing positively even though it is slowing down, as is the trade in motorized vehicles that tend to stagnate," said Zulkipli.

However, he continued, there were conditions that were less conducive, causing a decline in agricultural production, while the condition of the old well pushed for contraction in Mining and Excavation.

Zulkipli explained, in the first quarter of 2024 the agricultural sector reached minus 7.89 percent while in the fourth quarter of 2023 it could reach 1.70 percent.

"El Nino has caused a significant decline in production, especially rice commodities. Unfavorable weather has also led to a decline in horticultural and forestry production," he said.

Therefore, his party appealed based on this note that stakeholders could see the pattern and could anticipate it.

"From this, you can see the pattern, what can be seen to decrease or increase throughout 2024," he said.

He also hopes that the data that has been submitted through the official news of the East Java BPS statistics can be used as a reference for stakeholders to make policies.
