The Perum Institute for Indonesian Aviation Navigation Services or AirNav Indonesia issued a Notice to Airmen (Notam) or flight information related to the closure of Manado's Sam Ratulangi Airport, North Sulawesi. The notam was issued after the eruption of Mount Ruangan on Wednesday, April 17.

AirNav Indonesia Operations Director Riza Fahmi said the Notam numbered A1000/24 NOTAMR A0999/24 and the closure was extended to 23.59 WITA Thursday 18 April 2024 with the number NOTAM: A1003/24.

"We will update again if there are further developments," said Fahmi quoting Antara.

Fahmi said that currently 33 flights at Sam Ratulangi Airport were affected by the eruption of Mount Ruang, namely 18 departures and 15 arrivals.

Furthermore, there are three cargo planes and the rest are passenger planes. It is estimated that the number of passengers affected is around 3,182 people.

Data obtained based on BMKG satellite imagery at 01.30 UTC or 09.30 WITA was detected by the distribution of volcanic ash that spread in several areas of North Sulawesi. The results of the paper test carried out by the Sam Ratulangi Manado Airport team were observed to have volcanic ash reaching the surface.

"AirNav Indonesia will continue to cooperate with relevant stakeholders, namely Angkasa Pura I, BMKG, and the local Airport Authority to ensure flights in Manado and its surroundings are safely under control," said Fahmi.
