JAKARTA - Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera in Abu Dhabi said the energy transition is important in current global policy making and renewable energy lines will support sustainable and fairer world development.

The sustainable and fairer world development is because the energy transition will revitalize the economic landscape by helping people get out of poverty.

"As long as we remain on the path of innovation, collaboration, and determination, we can achieve the future of renewable energy-based energy that will support sustainable development, a sustainable and fairer world," La Camera said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, April 17.

The 14th IRENA General Assembly was held amid the global message amplification of the COP 28 Dubai Climate Summit, November 2024, regarding the importance of a three-fold increase in renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030 to prevent an increase in geothermal temperatures exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Camera says the world is currently entering a new era where energy transition is an important part of economic transformation.

The development of the energy transition, said Camera, will bring new opportunities that can revitalize the economy and improve the lives of the world's people, especially to get out of the trap of poverty.

"We can anticipate some challenges, but we can't anticipate some other challenges," he said.

The 14th IRENA General Assembly was also attended by representatives of the Indonesian Government led by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana.

Before attending the 14th IRENA general session, Dadan explained that Indonesia did not join the voices regarding efforts to triple the renewable energy capacity by 2030. However, Indonesia has a very strong commitment to achieve zero emissions by 2060 or sooner.

Dadan emphasized that efforts to reduce emissions and reduce greenhouse gases are the responsibility of all parties. However, the global target is necessary so as not to regulate the achievement of the country for the sake of the country because each country has the needs and capabilities related to the domestic situation. Moreover, this global target should not make a country inflexible.

"We want this global target not to enter the state's territory, this must be the country," he said.

IRENA 14th General Assembly President Jimmy Gasore explained that the COP28 Climate Summit in November last year brought historic progress through the UAE Consensus, in which calls for doubling renewable energy and energy efficiency by 2030.

He explained that the addition of renewable energy capacity had found a record high in 2023, but it was still far from needed.

We must modernize and expand our energy infrastructure. We must design and adapt broad and cross-sectoral policies to ensure that the energy transition remains the core of our national strategy," he said.
