PT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) will reduce 555 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2023 for the implementation of coal substitution with biomass (cofiring) at steam power plants (PLTU).
President Director of PLN Indonesia Power Edwin Nugraha Putra in his statement in Jakarta, Thursday, March 7, said the success was a form of the company's commitment to helping the government implement an energy transition.
According to him, the decarbonization of 555 thousand tons of CO2 came from the implementation of cofiring at 18 PLTU by utilizing 478,741 tons of biomass and producing a net energy of 509.54 GWh.
"Throughout 2023, PLN Indonesia Power has succeeded in reducing carbon emissions through increasing the use of biomass as a substitution of coal," he said, as reported by Antara.
The generators that have implemented cofiring until 2023 are PLTU Suralaya 1-4, Sanggau, Jeranjang, Suralaya 5-7, Lontar, Labuan, Pelabuhan Ratu, Adipala, Suralaya 8, Asam-asam, Sintang, Barru, Berau, Pangkalan Susu, Holtekamp, Bengkayang, Labuan Angin, and Ombilin.
Edwin also revealed that cofiring is a tangible manifestation of corporations in supporting PLN in leading the energy transition in Indonesia, as well as encouraging the achievement of new and renewable energy targets (EBT) in the national energy mix of 23 percent by 2025.
"The cofiring program that utilizes biomass is a real step for PLN IP in supporting the energy transition in PLN Group and also assisting the government in achieving the EBT target in the national energy mix," he said.
Edwin continued the cofiring program that utilizes various types of raw materials such as sawdust, palm shells, pieces of wood, garbage, and paper money waste, making the use of these raw materials create a multiplier impact on the economy.
The reason is, people can play a role in providing biomass raw materials, so that they can create new jobs and increase income.

According to Edwin, the success of cofiring is only a start for PLN Indonesia Power in implementing the energy transition and in the future PLN will continue to strive to accelerate the energy transition in Indonesia.
"We are preparing various EBT development programs in the electricity sector to realize the energy transition according to the target and make PLN the energy transition leader," he said.
