JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) together with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) highlighted the potential for the development of a bayu power plant (PLTB) on the north coast of Java which has a potential of 2 gigawatts (GW).

"The potential for the construction of electricity with old technology will be difficult to implement on the north coast of Java. But, with new technology, it can be placed on the north coast of Java," said PT PLN (Persero) President Director Darmawan Prasodjo in an event entitled, "Powering The Future: Sustainable Energy Transformation For Indonesia 2024" in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, March 6.

Darmawan explained that previously the height of the PLTB tower was only around 70 meters. Currently, using the latest technology, the tower height can reach 140 meters.

If it is 70 meters high, the wind speed is only 4.5 meters per second. So the capacity is only around 18-19 percent. The commercial one may not be feasible," he said.

However, Darmawan continued, by using new technology with a height of 140 meters, wind speeds increased from 4 meters per second to 6.5 7 meters per second.

"Where the capacity of the factor increases to 30-32 percent. This means that with new technology, it can be placed on the north coast of Java," said Darmawan.

Previously, the Director General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Jisman Hutajulu said that the PLTB in the northern part of Java reached 2 GW.

"(The potential) is around 2 GW," said Jisman at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Tuesday, March 5.

Regarding this potential, Jisman said the government would include it in the changes to the Electric Power Supply Business Draft (RUPTL) which is being discussed.

In addition to the potential for PLTB on the north coast of Java Island, Jisman also highlighted the potential for PLTB development in the southern part of Sulawesi Island.

Jisman opens the opportunity for PLTB potential to be developed by the private sector or "Independent Power Producer" (IPP).

"So there will be an IPP later, right. In the end, it will be auctioned off," said Jisman.
