JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) targets the revitalization of the Baros Market located on Jalan Serang-Pandeglang, Serang Regency, Banten, to be completed in 2024.
"During the implementation period of week 26 or period 11-17 December 2023, the physical construction has reached 50.07 percent and is targeted to be completed by mid-2024," said PUPR Ministry Spokesperson Endra S Atmawidjaja in a written statement, quoted Wednesday, December 27.
Endra said the revitalization of the Serang Baros Market had begun by the Banten Regional Settlement Infrastructure Agency (BPPW) of the Directorate General of Human Settlements through contractor PT Beringin Jaya Perkasa since the date of the contract for the implementation of June 19, 2023 with an implementation period of 360 days.
"The scope of work includes a thorough renovation with a contract value of Rp. 29.8 billion," he said.
He added that the revitalization of the Baros Market puts forward the concept of a modern people's market by providing safe, comfortable, clean, and well-organized trading center buildings.
According to Endra, the construction of healthy and hygienic people's market facilities will improve the means of trading goods/services in meeting daily needs
"So, it can support economic growth in the region, especially ensuring the distribution of basic commodities and moving the real sector or MSMEs," he said.
The Baros Market revitalization work was carried out by rebuilding old market buildings whose conditions were deemed inappropriate due to the large number of stalls and stall roofs leaking and there were no adequate supporting facilities, such as clean water sources, toilets, temporary garbage shelters, parking lots, and drainage systems.
Market revitalization is also carried out to organize traders who often sell to the side of the road, causing traffic jams on Jalan Raya Serang-Pandelang.
The Baros Market itself was built two floors on an area of 4,135 square meters with a market building area of 4,421 square meters.
Market buildings are projected to accommodate 366 traders to occupy 219 kiosks and 147 stalls.

It is known that the Baros Market is located between the center of the Serang City/Sang Regency government and Pandeglang Regency with a travel time using land transportation of about 20 minutes.
The existence of the Baros Market can be an alternative to the people's trade center or traditional market for the community even though Pandeglang or Serang regencies already have a main market.
