Have Potential EBT Capai 3,600 GW, RI Just Take Advantage Of 12.7 GW

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) noted that Indonesia has the potential for New and Renewable Energy as much as 3,600 GW.

Special Staff to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources for the Acceleration of Mineral and Coal Governance, Irwandy Arif, said that despite its great potential, Indonesia has only utilized at least 12 percent of the total potential.

"Indonesia has EBT resources whose potential is more than 3,600 GW which can be used to maintain energy supply, become the capital for energy transition and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, however, its use has only reached 12.7 GW or around 12.2 percent in the realization of the EBT mix," said Irwandy, quoted Wednesday, December 20.

In 2024, continued Irwandy, a total EBT power plant capacity of 13.6 GW is planned and to realize this target, efforts are needed to increase the use of EBT in the country such as Roof PLTS, 35 percent mandatory Biodiesel and the implementation of co-firing programs at PLTU.

Irwandi said, currently there is still a coal power contract running so that coal plants will reach their peak conditions by 2030. Phase-out itself will start regularly until 2060.

"In 2060, Indonesia will no longer use coal power plants and to support this plan several funding programs are launched to support this plan including carbon tax and carbon trading, the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and energy transition mechanism (ETM) programs. Overall, this plan requires an investment of USD1.1 trillion or USD28.5 billion per year until 2060," said Irwandy.

In addition to the efforts to accelerate above, the increase in added value of minerals is also one of the important steps in supporting the energy transition in Indonesia, among others, used as raw materials for solar, wind and nuclear power plants, distribution cables and electric vehicle batteries and EBT plants.
