JAKARTA - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif revealed that Indonesia has the potential for hydropower of 95 Gigawatts (GW). Currently, the installed capacity has reached 6.7 GW. By 2030, hydropower generation development is targeted to reach more than 10 GW.
"Furthermore, it will be further improved to reach 72 GW until 2060. Meanwhile, the pump storage will reach 4.2 GW," said Arifin, quoted on Wednesday, November 1.
Arifin explained that currently the government is prioritizing the development of super grid transmission to improve inter-island connectivity. More importantly to encourage the use of other hydro and renewable energy sources in Indonesia.
"Phydro workers are one of the renewable energies that can be used as a baseload and also as a solution for the intermittency of renewable energy variables, such as solar power and wind, in the power grid," said Arifin.
Currently, the construction of several hydro power generation projects in Indonesia is underway, namely the Jatigede hydropower plant with a capacity of 110 Megawatt (MW) and the Asahan hydropower plant (174 MW), which are targeted to reach the Commercial Operation Date (COD) in 2024. Then the Peusangan 1 and 2 hydropower plants (88 MW) as well as the Merangin hydropower plant (350 MW) which will be COD in 2025, as well as the Batang Toru hydropower plant (520 MW) which will be COD in 2026.

"To increase the role of hydro power in the electricity system, Indonesia is also developing the first pump storage, Upper Cisokan with a capacity of 1,040 MW, which utilizes the water flow of the Cisokan River, West Java," said Arifin.
The government also plans to float the green industry in Kalimantan, by utilizing hydro power. There are two large-scale hydro power projects that are being prepared, namely the Kayan hydropower plant with a capacity of 9,000 MW, which will supply electricity for the manufacturing industry.
Next is the PLTA Mentarang with a capacity of 1,375 MW which will provide electricity supply for the industry. "By utilizing the huge potential of hydro power located in Papua, the Government plans to build green hydrogen industrial areas, which will be built in several potential locations, namely Memberamo 1 (5,695 MW), Memberamo 2 (933 MW), and Edi Valen (630 MW)," concluded Arifin.
