JAKARTA - Israeli attacks in Gaza have left a huge hole in a hospital, less than 48 hours after US President Donald Trump announced that Hamas and Israel had agreed to advance a ceasefire plan.

The Gaza Ministry of Health said the attack destroyed vital medical supplies.

"When medicine is bombed, the disease becomes a weapon of war," said the Director General of the Gaza Ministry of Health, Munir Al-Bursh, as reported by CNN, Saturday, August 1.

According to the Ministry of Health, the attack destroyed two medical warehouses at the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital and damaged two other warehouses.

According to him, the refugee camp near the location was completely destroyed and the civilian tents were severely damaged.

The Israeli military said it was targeting Hamas militants, but would provide more details in a later statement.

Footage from the scene showed people rummaging in the large hole, trying to salvage medical supplies - such as intravenous fluids, breathing tubes, surgical masks and cotton swabs - buried among the rubble.

"Destroying a medical warehouse at a time when the Gaza health system already suffers from a 51% shortage of essential medicines... is a direct attack on one of the remaining life-saving health service lines," Bursh said.

In the last two days, eight civilians were killed and 76 others were injured, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said on Saturday, August 1.

More than 1,200 Palestinians have been killed since the announcement of the ceasefire deal in October last year.

For context: This latest attack comes shortly after Trump announced Thursday night that Hamas had agreed to "fully disarm" in conjunction with the withdrawal of Israeli forces.

Although the move marks progress on a long-stalled road map to peace - initiated by the Trump Peace Council last year - there are still a number of substantial issues to be resolved first.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not commented on Trump's announcement, but an Israeli official told CNN Israel would not withdraw its forces from Gaza without a disarmament by Hamas first.
