JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) is firmly listed on the Indonesian Carbon Exchange (IDX Carbon) and has become the largest carbon trader in Indonesia.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said, relying on the Block 3 Muara Karang Gas and Steam Power Plant (PLTGU).

"PLN has become the largest trader by opening almost 1 million tons of CO2 and we will still follow up with the potential that we have mapped," said Darmo at the Panja Meeting with Commission VI of the DPR RI, quoted on Wednesday 4 October.

Not only is it listed on the stock exchange, said Darmawan, PLN also carries out direct carbon trading by covering 3 of the 4 aspects of carbon trading, namely direct emissions trading, direct emissions offsets, and offset trading via the stock exchange. Moreover, PLN already has the PLN Climate Click platform where carbon trading activities, both emissions trading and emissions offsets, have started to be carried out since September 8 2023.

"When PLN enters the stock exchange some time in the future, we will immediately become the owner of the SPE with the largest reduction in emissions. We will also launch the PLN Climate Click application which is ready to be used for carbon trading which other companies don't have yet," he added.

Darmawan further revealed that regarding PLTGU Block 3 Muara Karang he would lead the steps for PLN power plants to enter the carbon exchange. This PLTGU has a greenhouse gas (GHG) SPE from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and has been recorded as successful in reducing carbon dioxide equivalent to almost 1 million tons in 2022.

PLTGU Block 3 Muara Karang has used 100% gas fuel that has been regasified from LNG in the Floating Storage and Regassification Unit (FSRU) using the LNG supply. This PLTGU is also equipped with the latest and most efficient gas turbine technology which uses the Combine Cycle method.

"PLN currently not only provides electricity but provides low-emission energy, where does that come from? Yes, of course it comes from new renewable energy generators. We are building an ambitious energy transition scenario through Accelerated Renewable Energy Development aggressively by adding the share of renewable energy development to 75 percent in 2040 with 25 percent of it from natural gas," concluded Darmawan.
