Climate Change For World Economic Loss Of Up To 23 Trillion US Dollars

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves) Luhut Binsar Panjaitan revealed that the current climate crisis is a major problem for the younger generation.

In addition, planet Earth is considered increasingly uninhabitable with the number of natural disasters that are increasingly frequent.

"This global crisis is projected to harm the global economy by 23 trillion US dollars by 2050 with a record of 3 million deaths every year," Luhut said in his remarks at the Indonesia Sustainability Forum, Thursday, September 7.

He continued, in July 2023 there was an increase in the global average temperature with the highest achievement in history, by 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than the average pre-industrial period.

"As a threat multiplier, the climate crisis affects food security and rural areas, development and poverty," added Luhut.

He said that at this time everyone was at a very important time in history.

To that end, everyone must take concrete steps that can determine the welfare of future generations and save the future from climate change.

"Globally, many things have been poured on paper but the concrete international collaboration with large speeds and scales needs to be done faster than before," he continued.

For this reason, he invites all countries present to work together so that this climate rescue mission can be carried out quickly from before.

"Indonesia is open to collaborating and working together in overcoming this problem," he said.

Luhut also said that Indonesia has an important role in global decarbonization efforts and has enormous biodiversity with 94 million hectares of tropical rainforests and has enormous renewable energy potential with a power of more than 3,600 GW.

"And we will continue to develop the green energy mix and Indonesia has pioneered several of the largest decarbonization projects and is committed to achieving net zero emission by 2060," concluded Luhut.
