JAKARTA - PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) together with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) conducted an applicative research and innovation collaboration in the cement industry and its derivatives.

This collaboration to create sustainable product and service solutions was carried out with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the President Director of GIS, Donny Arsal and Deputy for the Utilization of BRIN Research and Innovation, R. Hendrian at the BRIN Headquarters, BJ Habibie Building, Jakarta, on Monday 31 July.

The collaboration between SIG and BRIN includes research activities to create cement product innovations and their applicative derivatives, joint utilization of facilities and infrastructure in accordance with research activities, policy advocacy to carry out sustainable development, and provide product and service solutions that support national economic recovery and respond to aspects of climate change, as well as increased competence of human resources. This cooperation initiative is in line with the SIG Sustainability Pillar to Encourage Sustainable Solutions and Innovations.

The head of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, said that the development of research-based products is important to do to increase the added value of a product. BRIN is ready to provide support in the form of infrastructure facilities needed to the provision of human resources. In addition, BRIN can also facilitate products that have been produced and developed to enter the innovation catalog.

GIS has consistently carried out various decarbonization efforts, including through optimization of the production process to produce the best quality cement products, utilization of alternative fuel urban waste managed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF), hydrogen injection and thermal energy efficiency (STEC). In addition, SIG supports the development of renewable energy through the use of solar panels for electrical energy substitution in its operational units, as well as optimization of hot exhaust gas from the cement production process (Waste Heat Recovery Power Generation).

According to Donny Arsal, GIS has proven its ESG-based sustainability (Environmental, Social, and Governance) performance in 2022, with the achievement of the Gold PROPER award by the Cilacap PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI) Factory. Meanwhile, other GIS factories received the Green PROPER award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).

In addition, all GIS Factories also received a Green Industry award from the Ministry of Industry. Most recently, PT Semen Tonasa was selected as one of two companies in the world that won the Award of Excellence in Energy Management from Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) at the 2023 CEM s Energy Management event.
