JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) through the Bali-Pinda River Basin Center (BWS), the Directorate General of Water Resources has completed the construction work of the downstream flood control infrastructure for Tukad Unda in Klungkung Regency, Bali.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of PUPR Endra S. Atmawidjaja said urbanization and changes in land use procedures were a big challenge in Bali.

Changes in the rain pattern with a short duration but high intensity often cause flooding. The flood is very detrimental to Bali tourism.

"I invite all parties to maintain water catchment areas through reforestation and restrain the rate of land conversion. We are also building flood control infrastructure to reduce the risk of flood disasters in Bali," said Endra spokesman in a written statement, Monday, June 19.

Meanwhile, the Head of BWS Bali-Penida Muhammad Noor said that seeing the impact of the eruption of Mount Agung in 2018 and 2020 on the Tukad Unda watershed, synergy was needed between the Ministry of PUPR, the Bali Provincial Government, and the district government to control the flood of cold lava flows that often occur in the Tukad Unda watershed.

"Given the high post-eruption sedimentation and the erosion of river cliffs, river flow, and land owned by the community that has changed, it is necessary to control the Tukad Unda river channel," he said.

The scope of work carried out is the construction of the Tukad Yeh Sah Embankment, the Tukad Yeh Sah Dam Check, the Tukad Unda Embankment, the Tukad Unda Double Support Embankment, the Jetty Works, and the Groundsil.

"This development is useful as sediment control along the Yeh Sah River of 737,000 m3 and can reduce flooding in this area by 430 ha, as well as regulate river morphology as well," said Noor.

The flood control work of the Tukad Unda watershed, which covers an area of 230.92 Km2, was carried out by PT Nindya Karya and PT Bina Nusa Lestari (KSO) with a contract worth Rp258 billion, and used the Supervision Consultant PT Caturbina Guna Persada KSO, PT Multimera Harapan, and PT Laras Sembada with a contract value of Rp6.6 billion.

"The construction will begin on August 28, 2020 and will be completed on December 30, 2022 through the multi-year contract system," added Noor.

Later, the arrangement of the Tukad Unda area will also be integrated with the Bali Provincial Government's plan to build a Strategic Area for the Bali Cultural Center in Klungkung.
