Had Been A Favorite Until 2019, Used MPV Cars Are Starting To Lose Competition With SUV Types

JAKARTA - Sales of used cars will transition from a car capable of carrying many passengers, the Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV), to a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) in 2022. This change is due to the improving road infrastructure so that consumers tend to choose an SUV to enjoy traveling to various regions.

OLX Autos Indonesia's Classified and New Business Director, Agung Iskandar said, based on OLX Autos data, it shows that the trend of used car sales shifting from MPV to SUV has been seen in recent times. "In 2019 MPVs were still the best choice in the car and car segment. But in 2022, the market share fell and was replaced by SUVs, which increased by 31 percent from the previous 25 percent," said Agung Iskandar, quoted by Antara, Thursday, May 26.

"Because the infrastructure is getting better, they are now more fond of exploring new places," he said.

OLX Autos noted that segmentation shifts also occurred in the hatchback and Low-Cost Green Car (LCGC) segments which were quite significant from 2019 and 2022.

"Hatchbacks fell because they were competed by the trend of cheap vehicles such as the LCGC segment. Even so, buying interest for cheap used vehicles always has its own fans," he explained.

While the lowest segment is still held by the sedan variant. The used vehicle market from that segment only had an achievement of no more than 5 percent in 2019 and in 2022 it fell 1 percent to 4 percent in 2022.

"The sedan still has its fans, but in the last five years it has continued to decline," he said.

Speaking of vehicles that had become a prima donna in the 1990s, that segment was only chosen by loyal consumers who liked vehicles that were not so high-end.

"Even though it is currently the smallest segment, there are still loyal fans, mostly young people and executives," he said.

In this case, he also sees that the presence of vehicles that have luxurious and sporty designs often embrace the upper class with a fairly good level of comfort in them.
