Consulate General of Indonesia Songkhla: Malay attire reflects the bond of history and cultural identity

JAKARTA - The Malay Clothing Festival is not only a celebration of culture, but a reflection of the historical bond and cultural identity of Malay together between Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, said the Indonesian Consul in Songkhla.

The Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Songkhla, Thailand participated in the 2026 Malay Clothing event held by the Yala City Government, Yala Province, southern Thailand last month.

This annual Malay cultural and fashion festival is a strategic event to promote the richness of Nusantara fashion, as well as preserve the common values and encourage the creativity of Indonesian-Malaysian-Thai designers in the innovation of Malay cultural fashion products in the Southeast Asian region.

The Malay clothing, which was held for the fifth time, was officially opened by Yala Governor Kongsakun Chantarach, attended by representatives of the local government, diplomatic corps, creative industry players, designers, and fashion observers from various regions in southern Thailand and neighboring countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia.

The Indonesian Consul in Songkhla, Winardi H. Lucky, said that Malay clothes were an important medium in strengthening the art-cultural relations between neighboring countries in the region.

"For the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Songkhla, this festival is not only as a celebration of Malay culture, but also as a reflection of the historical bond and identity of Malay culture together between Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. We hope that this kind of art-cultural cooperation will continue to grow and strengthen mutual understanding and relations between the people of the three countries," explained Consul Lucky, launching the statement of the Indonesian Consulate in Songkhla (4/6).

The 2026 Malay Clothing features a variety of fashion works that highlight the Malay cultural identity from the three countries with a modern touch without abandoning traditional values.

This festival is a space for collaboration for Thai, Malaysian and Indonesian designers to continue to preserve and introduce Malay culture to the younger generation and the international community.

Indonesian designers also contributed to the design of materials, fabric motifs and ready-to-wear fashion designs in the Festival series.

In addition to setting up an exhibition booth to showcase the wealth of Malay culture products, the full support of the Consulate of RI Songkhla also took the form of a special appearance by the Chairperson of the Dharma Wanita Persatuan Consulate of RI Songkhla at the fashion show wearing typical Indonesian Malay costumes combined with a modern touch.

The participation of the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Songkhla in the 2026 Thai Malay Festival in Yala this time is part of Indonesia's cultural diplomacy efforts in southern Thailand as well as strengthening people-to-people contact through the promotion of culture and creative industries.

Yala Province is one of the 14 provinces in the area of the Indonesian Consulate in Songkhla. Yala City is located about 140km to the southeast of Songkhla City, and is claimed as the "Center of Malay Fashion" in the southern Thailand region, where the government is intensifying the implementation of fashion or garment production based on sustainability, circular economy, authenticity and youth-driven subculture.
