JAKARTA - The presence of two tropical cyclone seeds 93S and 95W around Indonesia has the potential to trigger increased rainfall in a number of areas today, Monday, March 9, as analyzed by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

BMKG Praktirawan Diahayu said BMKG was monitoring the tropical cyclone 93S seed in the southern Indian Ocean Lampung with a maximum wind speed of around 30 knots and a minimum air pressure of 999 hPa.

BMKG confirmed that the system has a low potential to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours and is expected to weaken with wind intensity decreasing to around 25 knots in the 48 to 72 hour period.

"This cyclone seed also induces the formation of low-level jet winds and convergence areas in the southern Indian Ocean of Lampung," Diahayu was quoted as saying by Antara, Monday, March 9.

BMKG is also monitoring the tropical cyclone 95W seeds detected in the northern Pacific Ocean of Papua with a maximum wind speed of around 15 knots and a minimum air pressure of 1006 hPa.

The system also has a low potential to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours and is expected to weaken in the next two to three days.

In addition to the two cyclone seeds, BMKG identified the circulation of cyclones in the waters west of Aceh and the Sulawesi Sea which formed a convergence area from the waters west of Aceh to the Aceh region and around the Sulawesi Sea.

Diahayu explained that the combination of atmospheric dynamics from tropical cyclone seeds, cyclonic circulation, and wind convergence increases the potential for rain cloud growth in a number of regions of Indonesia.

BMKG urges the public to be aware of the potential for heavy to very heavy rain which is predicted to occur in Bengkulu, Lampung, West Java, Central Java, East Java, and East Nusa Tenggara.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rain is also potentially occurring in a number of other areas marked with yellow in the BMKG early warning map.

For weather forecasts in major cities, BMKG predicts that rain accompanied by lightning is potentially occurring in Bandar Lampung and Banjarmasin, while moderate intensity rain is predicted to occur in Bengkulu, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Tanjung Selor.

Meanwhile, light rain is predicted to occur in a number of cities such as Medan, Padang, Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, Serang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Pontianak, Samarinda, and Palangka Raya, while heavy cloudy conditions are predicted to occur in Banda Aceh, Tanjung Pinang, Pekanbaru, and Jambi.

In the eastern part of Indonesia, BMKG predicts that rain accompanied by lightning is potentially occurring in Merauke, moderate rain in Kupang, Mamuju, and Makassar, and light rain in Denpasar, Mataram, Kendari, Palu, Gorontalo, Manado, Ambon, Ternate, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Jayawijaya.
