JAKARTA - Former Israeli War Cabinet Minister Gal Eisenkot has opposed Israeli Defense Minister (Menhan) Katz's desire to place and expand the Israeli army's presence in Gaza.

Eisenkot accused the Israeli government of "acting against the broad Israeli national consensus, during a critical period for national security."

"While the Government [of Israel] with one hand supports Trump's plan, with the other hand they sell the myth of the isolated settlement core in the Gaza Strip," he wrote on his X account, Tuesday, December 23, quoted from AFP.

Katz's desire to expand the army's positions in the northern Palestinian territories, including its military and agricultural settlements in Nahal, northern Gaza, is in contrast to the ceasefire agreement that was supposed to enter the second phase.

In that phase, the Israeli army should withdraw from its positions in Gaza. Next, the interim authority will rule the Palestinian territory in place of Hamas, and international stabilization forces will be deployed to Gaza.

The second phase of the ceasefire agreement also includes the demilitarization of Gaza, including the disarmament of Hamas.

Previously on Thursday last week, a number of Israeli citizens entered the Gaza Strip ignoring military orders and held a symbolic flag-raising ceremony to call for the reoccupation and resettlement of Palestinian territory.
