JAKARTA - National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo revealed that Indonesia ranks third with the highest natural disaster potential in the world based on the results of the 2025 Surveillance Risk Index.

This was conveyed by Listyo while leading the Natural Disaster Emergency Response Apple at the Mako Brimob Field of the National Police, Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java, Wednesday 5 November 2025

According to him, this position confirms that natural disasters are one of the global challenges faced by all countries, including Indonesia, which is located in the Ring of Fire area or the world ring of fire.

"This condition makes Indonesia one of the countries with the highest level of disaster vulnerability in the world," Listyo said in his remarks

Listyo said, based on a report by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDDR), around 124 million people in the world are affected by natural disasters every year.

Meanwhile in Indonesia, data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) until October 19, 2025 noted that 2,606 natural disasters have occurred so far this year.

In detail, 1,289 floods, 544 extreme weather, 511 forest and land fires (karhutla), 189 landslides, 22 earthquakes, and 4 volcanic eruptions.

As a result of these disasters, 361 people died, 37 people were missing, and more than 5.2 million people were displaced. In addition, more than 31,000 houses and 887 public facilities were damaged.

Listyo emphasized that the impact of disasters not only caused casualties and economic losses, but also left social trauma and disrupted community stability.

"Comparatory, responsive, and sustainable strategic steps are needed in preventing and tackling various potential disasters," he said.

Listyo also reminded that the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that 43.8 percent of Indonesia's territory has entered the rainy season, with the peak occurring from November 2025 to January 2026.

The La Nina phenomenon, which is expected to occur until February 2026, although in the weak category, is also said to increase the potential for hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, and high waves in a number of areas.

"The speed and accuracy of the response are the main factors in disaster management. Therefore, optimal readiness is needed from all elements of the nation," said Listyo.

The National Police Chief emphasized that cross-sectoral synergies between the TNI-Polri, BNPB, Basarnas, BMKG, and local governments are the keys in building a resilient disaster mitigation system.

"In facing these challenges, speed and accuracy of response are one of the main factors in the outcome of disaster management," he said.

"Therefore, optimal readiness is needed from all elements, from the TNI-Polri, central to regional governments, BNPB, Basarnas, PMI, BMKG, the Ministry of Institutions and related Stakeholders, along with the entire community, to ensure the implementation of quick response to every disaster situation," he concluded.*
